Tea has been grown in India since ages. Nowadays tea is the most popular beverage in world. Hundreds of people of every age group drink tea. Tea has three main varieties green, black and oolong. The difference is only lie in how they are processed. Green tea (Camellia sinesis) contain high amount of antioxidants. Antioxidants are the substances that fight the free radical that causes aging, damage DNA and sometime may even be the cause of death.

Therefore, green tea has been considered as very essential for the health of a human being.

Benefits of Green Tea

Atherosclerosis

Large number of studies suggests that the antioxidant in green tea help to get rid of atherosclerosis, which is a coronary artery disease. The experiments have been done on large number of people, the people suffering from this disease are made to drink green tea and the results are shocking. Large number of people who consumed green tea are free from this disease now.

Research show that by consuming green tea the risk of having heart disease has been reduced. In fact the researchers have told that heart attack reduces by 11% if a person consumes 3 cups of green tea in one day.

In May 2006, the tea makers made a petition to FDA to print on the packs of green tea that it reduces heart disease. But FDA rejected this petition because there is no evidence to support the claim.

High Cholesterol

Experiments show that green tea reduces total cholesterol and raises high density lipoprotein (HDL) in both animal as well as people. Studies suggest that people who drink green tea have low level of cholesterol than people who does not drink green tea.

Studies show that the antioxidant in green tea blocks the cholesterol form being absorbed in intestine. Thereby making the body get away from cholesterol level.

In case of male smokers it has been found out that green tea has reduced the level of Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol.

Cancer

Researchers have shown that green tea help protect against cancer. In Japan the cancer rates have been reduced because a person there consumes green tea.

Lung Cancer: Green tea antioxidant is named as polyphenol. It is shown that polyphenol reduces the growth of lung cancer cells in test tubes. While one study at Okinawan tea which is similar to green tea increases the risk of lung cancer. Therefore more research is required before coming to a final conclusion.

Pancreatic Cancer: In one study people who drink green tea and people who do not drink green tea were compared. It was noticed that people who drink green tea have less risk of having pancreatic cancer. It was largely true for women. For men it was like having 37% less risk of having pancreatic cancer. But nothing is sure yet researches in this field are going on.

Prostate Cancer: A clinical study was carried out in southeast china. It showed that people who drink green tea have less risk of having prostate cancer. But disadvantage is that green tea stimulates the cells that are less sensitive to chemotherapy. People who are undergoing chemotherapy should ask for doctor advice whether to drink green tea or not to drink green tea.

Skin Cancer: The main antioxidant in green tea is polyphenol is epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). Clinical studies suggest that green tea has anti cancer properties therefore the risk of having skin cancer also reduces. The antioxidant in green tea prevents the growth of skin tumor.

Stomach Cancer: Two studies were conducted. In one studies where people who drink green tea and people who did not drink green tea were compared. It showed that people who drink green tea have immunity up to 50% from the stomach cancer. In other study where large number of people were involved concluded that there is no link between green tea and stomach cancer.

Researches and experiments are being carried out but no final conclusion has been made until now.

Diabetes

Green tea has been used to control the blood sugar level. Animal experiments suggest that green tea help to prevent type 1diabetes. Green tea help normalize sugar in the human body.

Weight Loss

Studies show that green tea help in faster metabolism. It helps in reducing body fat of overweight people thereby making their body in proper shape.

It may be better to not have food for three days than not have green tea for one day!!!
